Oil absorption
The amount of oil a powder absorbs before it forms a paste, used to estimate binder demand in paint.
Oil absorption is reported as grams of oil per 100 g of powder. A filler with low oil absorption needs less binder to wet it, so it can be used at higher loadings without making the paint too thick.
Barium sulphate generally has low oil absorption, which is one reason it is used in high-solids coatings. Oil absorption is one of the physical tests carried out in our laboratory.
