Glossary
Barium sulphate
The chemical compound BaSO4. Found in nature as the mineral barite, and also produced chemically as blanc fixe.
Barium sulphate is a white, chemically inert compound with very low solubility in water, acids and alkalis. It has a high density and a low surface area, which makes it useful as a filler and as a weighting material.
Natural barium sulphate is mined as barite and processed by beneficiation and grinding. Synthetic barium sulphate, known as precipitated barium sulphate or blanc fixe, is made by a chemical reaction and is classified separately for trade.
