How to choose a barite supplier: a checklist for buyers
Price per tonne is only one line in the decision. These are the questions that separate a reliable barite supplier from a risky one.
Barite is on the final 2025 US List of Critical Minerals, and the largest producer, India, has put a licence on exports of its high-grade material.12 Choosing a supplier is now about security of supply as well as price. Use these ten questions when you assess a new source.
Source and reserves
- Does the supplier mine its own barite? A producer with its own mines controls its ore. A trader depends on other people's supply.
- What licences and reserves does it hold? Ask where the mines are, how large the licensed areas are, and when the licences expire.
- Which deposit does your grade come from? Ore from different deposits has different chemistry. Consistent supply from the same source makes consistent product.
Quality and testing
- How is the ore tested before processing? Look for chemical analysis, such as XRF, on samples from the mine.
- How is the finished product tested? For drilling barite, ask for results against each API 13A requirement: density, residue above 75 µm, particles below 6 µm and soluble calcium. For coatings, ask for particle size distribution, whiteness and oil absorption.
- Is laboratory equipment calibrated? Ask whether test equipment is calibrated and verified by accredited organisations.
- What comes with each shipment? A certificate of analysis for the batch should match the agreed specification.
Documents and compliance
- Can the supplier provide a current safety data sheet and technical data sheet for your exact grade? Check the crystalline silica content on the safety data sheet, because it usually decides the hazard classification.
Logistics
- What packing is available? Bulk, big bags or small bags, and how they are protected for sea freight.
- Which ports and routes can the supplier ship from? USGS notes that ocean freight is cheaper than rail and truck, which is why many drilling regions use imported barite.3 The route can matter as much as the price.

Frequently asked questions
What documents should a barite supplier provide?
A technical data sheet and safety data sheet for the grade, and a certificate of analysis for each batch. Exporters will also provide a commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin.
Why does it matter if a supplier owns its mines?
A producer with its own licensed reserves controls the ore its product is made from, which helps keep quality consistent and supply predictable over the length of a contract.
