HS codes for barite and barium sulphate

A quick reference for buyers and logistics teams importing barite.

Container ship at a port

The Harmonized System (HS) is the international nomenclature customs authorities use to classify goods. The first six digits are the same in every country that uses it. Countries then add their own digits for national tariffs and statistics.

The codes that matter

HS codeDescription
2511.10Natural barium sulphate (barytes)
2511.20Natural barium carbonate (witherite)
2833.27Barium sulphate as a chemical product, for example precipitated barium sulphate (blanc fixe)

Natural barite that has been mined, beneficiated and ground, including micronized barite and API barite, is generally classified under heading 2511.10. Precipitated barium sulphate is made chemically and falls under chapter 28 instead.

National codes

Your import tariff code will be longer than six digits. The European Union uses eight-digit Combined Nomenclature codes, and Türkiye uses twelve-digit GTİP codes. The first six digits stay the same. Always confirm the full code with your customs broker, because duty rates and requirements are set at the national level.

Documents that usually travel with a shipment

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Certificate of origin
  • Certificate of analysis for the batch
  • Safety data sheet
  • Bill of lading or other transport document

Requirements vary by destination and by contract. Agree the document set with your supplier before the first order.
