Laser diffraction
The standard method for measuring the particle size distribution of fine powders.
A dispersed sample passes through a laser beam. Particles scatter light at angles that depend on their size: small particles scatter at wide angles, large particles at narrow angles. The instrument converts this pattern into a full size distribution, including d10, d50 and d97.
In our laboratory, particle size is measured on a Malvern Mastersizer 3000.
