d97 (top cut)

The particle size below which 97% of a powder, by volume, falls.

d97 describes the coarse end of a particle size distribution and is often called the top cut. In coatings, a low d97 helps give a smooth film, because a few oversized particles can show up as roughness.

Two products with the same d50 can have very different d97 values, so data sheets usually report both.
