API 13A
The American Petroleum Institute specification for drilling fluid materials, including drilling-grade barite.
API Specification 13A sets the requirements that drilling fluid materials must meet. For barite, it covers density, water-soluble alkaline earth metals (as calcium), the residue coarser than 75 µm and the share of particles finer than 6 µm.
Two density grades are commonly referenced: barite with a minimum density of 4.20 g/cm³ and barite with a minimum of 4.10 g/cm³. Buyers usually state which grade they need.
