Specific gravity

The density of a material compared with the density of water.

Specific gravity (SG) has no unit. A material with an SG of 4.2 is 4.2 times as dense as water. For barite, SG is one of the most important quality figures, because it decides how effective the mineral is as a weighting agent.

Barite typically has an SG of about 4.1 to 4.5, depending on purity. Calcite is about 2.7 and hematite about 5.0 to 5.3.
