What is barite used for? Every major use, explained

Most barite goes down oil and gas wells. The rest ends up in products you use every day, from car paint to brake pads.

Pile of fine white mineral powder

Quick answer

Barite (barium sulphate) is used mainly as a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids. Turkey's General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration puts this use at 85% to 90% of world output.2 It is also used as a filler in paints, plastics and rubber, in brake and clutch pads, in radiation-shielding concrete and, in ultrapure form, as a medical contrast agent.1

Barite is useful for three reasons. It is very dense, with a specific gravity above 4. It is chemically inert and barely dissolves. And it is soft, so it does not wear out the equipment it passes through.

1. Drilling fluids

In oil and gas drilling, barite is added to the drilling mud to make it heavier. The weight of the fluid column holds back the pressure in the rock formations and keeps the well under control. In the United States, more than 90% of barite sold goes into this use, and USGS reports there is no large-scale alternative.1

Drilling barite is specified under API 13A, which sets limits for density, particle size and soluble calcium. Read more in our guide to the API 13A barite specification.

2. Paints and coatings

Ground and micronized barite is used as a filler and extender in paints and coatings. USGS lists automobile paint primer, used for metal protection and gloss, as a specific application.1 Barite is chemically resistant and has a refractive index of about 1.64, and coatings suppliers market it for weather resistance, chemical resistance and gloss control.3

Barium sulphate can also make paint very white. Researchers at Purdue University developed an experimental barium sulphate paint that reflects 98.1% of sunlight and kept surfaces cooler than the surrounding air in direct sun.4

3. Plastics and rubber

Barite is used as a filler and weighting agent in plastics and rubber.1 Its density adds mass and its inertness means it does not react with the polymer.

4. Brake and clutch pads

USGS lists automobile brake and clutch pads among the specific uses of barite.1 In friction materials it acts as a dense, stable filler.

5. Radiation shielding

Barite blocks X-rays and gamma rays well. It is used as aggregate in high-density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, in nuclear power plants and in research facilities.1

6. Lead-acid batteries

Small amounts of barium sulphate are added to the negative plates of lead-acid batteries as part of the expander. It helps lead sulphate crystals form evenly during discharge. A 2010 study in the Journal of Power Sources found the strongest effect at 1.0% by weight relative to the leady oxide used to make the paste.5

7. Medical imaging

Ultrapure barium sulphate is used as a contrast medium in X-ray and CT examinations of the digestive tract.1 Medical barium sulphate is a regulated pharmaceutical product, made to drug standards and approved by authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration.6

8. Other industrial uses

  • As a weighting agent in the cement jacket around underwater petroleum pipelines1
  • In mould-release compounds in the metal-casting industry1

KHN Minerals supplies micronized barium sulphate for paints and coatings, and API barite for drilling fluids.

Frequently asked questions

What is barite mainly used for?

As a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids. This takes 85% to 90% of world barite output, and more than 90% of barite sold in the United States.

Is barite used in paint?

Yes. Ground and micronized barite is a filler and extender in paints and coatings, including automotive primers. It adds chemical resistance and helps control gloss.

Why is barite used for radiation shielding?

Because barium is dense and blocks X-rays and gamma rays. Barite aggregate makes high-density concrete for hospital X-ray rooms and nuclear facilities.
