Flotation

A separation method that uses air bubbles and chemical collectors to float selected minerals out of a slurry.

In flotation, finely ground ore is mixed with water and reagents called collectors, which make the target mineral repel water. Air bubbles attach to those particles and carry them to the surface, where they are skimmed off.

For barite, flotation is used on fine particles and on tailings from gravity separation. Anionic collectors such as fatty acid alkyl sulfate or alkyl sulfonate, or cationic amide collectors, are commonly used.
