Barite or calcite? Choosing a filler for paints and coatings
Both are white mineral fillers. They behave very differently in a formulation.
Calcium carbonate (calcite) is the most widely used filler in paint. Barium sulphate (barite) is used less, but in many coatings it does a job calcite cannot. Knowing where each one fits helps formulators balance performance and cost.
The key differences
| Property | Barite | Calcite |
|---|---|---|
| Chemistry | BaSO4 | CaCO3 |
| Typical specific gravity | About 4.3 to 4.5 | About 2.7 |
| Mohs hardness | 3 to 3.5 | 3 |
| Resistance to acids | Insoluble, chemically inert | Dissolves in acids |
Chemical resistance
Barium sulphate is chemically inert and practically insoluble in acids and alkalis. Calcium carbonate reacts with acids. In coatings that need to resist chemicals, acid rain or industrial atmospheres, such as primers and industrial coatings, barite is often the safer choice.
Density and cost per volume
Barite is much denser than calcite. Paint is formulated by volume, but fillers are bought by weight. A kilogram of barite fills a smaller volume than a kilogram of calcite, so barite looks more expensive per litre of paint. It earns its place where its other properties matter, not as a cheap way to add volume.
The high density can also be useful. Barite gives coatings a solid, heavy body and is used in applications where mass helps, such as sound damping.
Whiteness and purity
For both minerals, whiteness depends on impurities, especially iron oxide. A barite with low Fe2O3 gives a clean, bright white that does not shift the colour of the finished paint. Low silica keeps it non-abrasive, which protects mixing and application equipment.
The typical raw material from our mines contains 97.00% BaSO4, 0.10% Fe2O3 and 0.02% SiO2.
Using them together
Many formulations use both. Calcite provides economical bulk, while barite adds chemical resistance, density and a smooth finish. The right balance depends on the end use, the binder and the price point of the product.
