Hematite

An iron oxide mineral, Fe2O3, used as a high-density weighting agent.

Hematite has a higher specific gravity than barite, typically around 5.0 to 5.3, so less of it is needed to reach a given mud weight. It is also much harder, which makes it more abrasive to drilling equipment.

In barite used for paints, iron oxide is an impurity: the lower the Fe2O3 content, the whiter the product.
